The Filimeato Feast is coming up on Sunday and to ensure a happy crowd I decided I better take my Filipino bbq on a test run. Filipino cooking is new to me, and have only been attempting it since realizing how great their food is after a recent trip to the 7000 islands this past winter. So I know I like Filipino bbq, I know what it's supposed to taste like, what it's supposed to look like, but like some many foreign things, have no idea what's really in it. After coming back from the Philippines, I got two cookbooks, and between them tried to make some sense of what their BBQ is made of and took a stab at it tonight in preparation for this weekend's all out feast.

Memorial Day weekend and the days preceding were jam packed with non-stop adventure in an effort to cram in as much as possible for our out-of-town guests. We went everywhere from the Bronx Zoo all the way down to Coney Island. Eating was non-stop as well, since how can you come to NY without eating at Burger Joint, Nathan's, Lombardi's, UFC, Pomme Frites...and the list just keeps going. So after all the weekend excitement, Monday night rolled around and I found myself oddly alone for dinner.
Cooking for one is always a challenge for me, because I find it easier, and more economical, to cook for a crowd. So I went in search for a recipe that could easily be adjusted for one, without having leftovers, since the rest of this week I'll be out and about again. I chose a Bourbon-brined pork chop, seeing as I already had all the ingredients at home (besides the meat) and it seemed like a meal well suited to make for one.

I eat at Thai a lot, since two of my favorites (Thai Pavilion and Arharn Thai) are in Astoria, and every year they have a contest to win free tickets to Thailand. Each year I enter over and over, but for reasons that are beyond me, I never seem to win. Well, winner selection just passed, and guess what, I'm just as big of a loser this year as in the past. I guess I just have to settle on bringing Thailand to me, so I grilled up some tasty Thai chicken breasts with a sweet, sour, and spicy dipping sauce...so many flavors in one!

Does it seem fishy to anyone else that only 2 days after my post about the pursuit of an excellent homemade burger, that the NY Times came out with one of their own? Hmmmm...
Seriously though, go read it, since they have some different, very good, suggestions for you, and all I really want in life is for you to make a good burger.

It was bound to happen, so I guess it's best to just get it out of the way; Shake Shack. God knows those two words did not need even one more utterance in a blog anywhere, but I went ahead and said them. It's over, done with, and now I can go on.
The Meatwave and mother nature have has a rocky relationship since the begging, with first ever Meatwave, Meatmorial Day, being canceled due to rain. Ever since then the kickoff of the season has always been plagued by rain and cold weather, and it seemed this year would be no different with some ominous weather reports. Although I always remain hopeful that The Meatwave will triumph over the elements, I decided to proceed with caution and not go crazy buying a ton of meat that might not get eaten. I figured burgers were a good place to start, since I have my new meat grinding toy, and even if we were to get rained out, I could still make my patties and freeze them for later use. As I expected, the meat was victorious: the sun was shining, the weather warmed up, and besides a quick passing shower, it was one hell of a great Meatwave.
