If you've been reading this blog you probably know two things about me by now: I am part of local CSA and I really love Good Eats. Although not as mystifying as mizuna, leeks, another share veggie from last week, were something I have never prepared in my life. In fact, my entire knowledge of this veggie is based on a 1/2 hour episode of a certain television program. So this was my starting point to deal with the leek, and after successfully delicious attempt at frying leek rings (so much better than onion rings in many ways), I turned to another preparation I could get excited about, grilling them....oh, and did I mention that this involved bacon!

So it worked, I went to bed and by the time I woke up, it was time for more bbq (not that it isn't always time for bbq)! Sadly my friends couldn't make it today, but that didn't stop me from sampling a few more items that were being served up at this year's party.

When you normally exit the subway in NYC during the summer months, you're greeted by the wonderful aroma of urine and/or rotting garbage, but there's two days a summer where, upon your exit at 23rd St and 5th Ave, you're nose is filled with nothing except the sweet smell of barbecue. When this happens, you know the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party has finally arrived, and the long wait is finally over. Although I wish it could last forever, I know that good things don't last, so I get as much 'cue into these two days as possible.

Excitement was in the air on Tuesday after work. After spending the winter trying to get on the Hellgate CSA, then being wait listed, and finally being accepted, the first distribution day was at hand. For those who are unfamiliar with a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), here's how it works: A community of people pair together with a local farmer who provides fresh fruit and produce for the members once a week. So we get whatever is in season on the farm, and this week's share included red salad bowl lettuce, curly cress, oregano, radishes, leeks, and mizuna. Mizuna, hmmmm, never heard of that one before... So the gf went on a search to find a recipe that would utilize this salad herb, and low-and-behold, she found something that included 1/2 of this week's share, plus called for a nice steak on top. What can't she do?

What was I thinking when I attempted to make Filipino BBQ last week from a cookbook? Why would I ever do that when I have direct connections to family from the Philippines that could have warned me what I was doing was wrong? I don't really know why I chose to do things the way I did, but I made sure to correct the problem before the grand Filimeato Feast. I went straight to the source for a recipe, provided by the bbq maker in the gf's family, and the end result was everything I ever wanted.
