Where's the Meat?

The end of summer has found me out and about, not in front of a computer for the last week and a half or so. Although this trend is going to continue until after Labor day, it doesn't mean that I have forgotten this blog or my dedication to the meat. Quite the opposite, I've been been eating my heart out, or is that eating my heart to its death? Either way, the meat is still on, circumstances have just made it impossible for it to find its way onto this blog yet. If you're in need of a real meat fix, you best start preparing yourself now for the celebration that will unfold next Sunday, Sept 9, at New Pork City. Multiple types of ribs are already in the works for this blowout to commemorate my tenth year as a resident of New York City!

Feeling Ducky

Off the Meaten Path

Off the Meaten Path was a fine idea conceptually, a way to get us to grill things we haven't grilled before, but as the days to the Meatwave approached, it was becoming clear I was going to have to make something that could be prepared in a couple hours, and my brain was totally stuck on thoughts of turkey legs, and turkey is nothing new to the Meatwave. I had smoked a whole turkey last year and even though I had never done just legs, I still felt as if my idea was a total cop-out. Foolishly, I did not consult any of my numerous cookbooks for other ideas, and took off for the grocery with only one half-assed idea of what to cook. At the store, I found the usual place reserved for turkey legs occupied by endless amounts of ground turkey, d'oh! Feeling defeated and down, I turned the corner and caught a quick glimpse of an uncommon site. Tucked away in the corner were 3 whole ducks, a favorite of mine that I had not even considered and was something I also had never made before. Both overjoyed by my discovery and felling utterly stupid for not thinking of it earlier, I grabbed a duck, checked out and read up on how to grill them at home.

Off the Meaten Path

Off the Meaten Path

Saturday was a true Meatwave adventure Off the Meatwave Path. The amount and variety of foods that were brought surpassed any Meatwave that has come before, but hopefully not all that are still to come. We spanned spectrums of meat from duck to lamb to beef to fish to pork. Then there were the great grilled vegetables and fruits that complemented our journey through the waves of meat, and evidence of this follows just after the jump.

The Summer of Squash

Summer Squash

I've been good at staying on topic so far. Every recipe I've shared with you has featured meat in some form or another, and that's the way it should be. Realistically speaking, that's not always how it is though. I know, I know, the truth isn't always pretty, but it's still the truth. I pride myself at creating a non-discriminatory Meatwave, and even though everything obviously ways heavily on the meat side, there is room in my heart to embrace some totally non-meat items, as long as they're still grilled or smoked that is. So to my veggie friends out there, here's one of my favorite, and most simple, grilled non-meat delights, the summer squash.

The Bacon Cheeseburger Sausage

Bacon Cheeseburger Sausage

Somewhere between brilliance and a sausage wrapped in a chocolate chip pancake on a stick, lay my idea for a bacon cheeseburger sausage. When I first received my meat grinder, I was lost in thoughts about the great hamburgers and sausages I was destined to make with it. At some point those two thoughts melded into one, leading my brain to conceive the bacon cheeseburger sausage. As an American, I feel it was my patriotic duty to set forth and create this totally unnecessary food monstrosity, not so much because I should, but because I could.
