Testing the Waters

Grilled Striped Bass

I'm not sure if it's a mystery, but in case you don't know already, I do not like seafood. I'm on a quest to stomp out all of my annoying food aversions—making great strides in most—but seafood is a pesky one that doesn't seem to want to go away. I've come to tolerate some fried variations (calamari and fish and chips), but beyond that, my taste buds are not having any of it. Deep down I do want to be a seafood eater, so I thought the best way to get my feet wet was to take this dislike straight to the grill.

Meating of the Minds

Meating of the Minds

I believe in spreading the gospel of the meat throughout the land, always trying to convert more and more people into hardcore Meatwavers. Even though each Meatwave is an open invitation for friends, I try to dedicate one each year just to this idea. For reasons too long to go into now, I scaled back that open invitation this year and have been keeping the festivities smaller than normal, with very few, if any, new Meatwavers coming on board. I was missing the old ways though, and decided to open up the Meatwave again for what would be a true Meating of the Minds.

Tangy Pit Beans

Tangy Pit Beans

It happens almost every summer, it comes closer to the end of the season and I start wondering where it all went. In a mad dash to fit in as much fun into these fleeting days, I find myself less and less plopping down in front of the computer, choosing instead to be bad to my blog in pursuit of all else that I had neglected during the prior months. Since time is such a commodity for me this time of year, I've also found ways to cut the time I spend in the kitchen, without giving it up completely, starting with this quick and delicious recipe for Tangy Pit Beans.

Stuck on the Southside

Southside Market

So once again I might have left you asking, "Where's the Meat?"

The Meatwave went on a little hiatus as I traveled deep into the heart of Texas to my personal mecca, Southside Market. Once there, the power of Elgin sausage and smoked brisket took hold and I just never left (well, mentally at least). Of lesser importance, I also shot a wedding in the land where the stars shine bright, and the aftermath of that has left me temporarily indisposed back at the homestead. I hope to have things back on track next week with tales of tangy pit beans, smoked short ribs, and a foray into fish.

In the meantime, enjoy a chimichurri-stuffed flank steak with a side of sweet onion salad, and end it with some grilled peaches with fresh raspberry sauce.

Meat the Parents

Meat the Parents

The addition of the Bolt, Vamoose, and Megabus haven't made DC any closer, but they sure have made it a lot cheaper. This has driven my Mother to take up residence in New York more weekends than I can count. Prior to this past Sunday, none of her recent visits have coincided with a Meatwave, but she made sure that this last one did. So with my Mom on the Meatlist, and bringing my Poppy and Uncle Ronny in tow, I invited all Meatwavers to come out and Meat the Parents.
