Meatup

Untitled-1

After last weekend's Big Apple BBQ Block Party, I had an itch to make barbecue for The Meatwave. I went crazy for Meatup, smoking some ribs, sausage, and beans for the masses to enjoy. I did not take into consideration that Sunday was also Father's Day, and apparently people do spend the day with their fathers, who knew? So the masses were more like a small huddle, but everyone came with a ferocious appetite, devouring all meat in site.

I cannot stop signing praises for the Southside Market's Elgin Hot Links after having them last weekend. Since then, I've been unable to get those beautiful, juicy, spicy sausages out of my head. I had to try to make them myself to feed the craving, so I offered them up at The Meatwave. Although they didn't come close to Southside's, they at least let me dream about something else last night.

My dreams went off sausage and onto ribs. Not being totally confident with my sausage making abilities yet, I also smoked some ribs, something I know I'm very competent at. I swear each time I make these ribs they just get better and better, and these ended up being in the top rank for me. I was worried I had made too many for the small amount of people, but every one was gone before the night was over.

The Mikebot made a grand return, bearing the gift of tabouli. I never thought I'd be such a fan of bulgar wheat, but instead of going for a bowl of ice cream, I went for seconds on the tabouli. Mike was in Meatup mode, with the intention of bringing new friend of The Meatwave, Emily, along with him. Unfortunately an overly long wait for the B61 kept her from joining us, but I hope she'll grace us with her presence at some point. Until then, go read about her craziness for casseroles.

Even with his lawerly duties, Kevin still made it out yesterday, along with his friend Brody. They brought alcoholic refreshment, which was much needed on the 90 degree day. Brody hails from Nashville, TN, and was great to have around as we talked ribs while he chowed down on my own. I'm really lucky to have my close friend Kevin back in NYC this summer, as he and his meat eating capabilities were dearly missed the previous two while he was lost in Venice and DC.

The Meatwave ended with a big bowl of cookies and cream ice cream that I made. Dr. Popsicle was so upset she missed this that she had to drop what she was doing and go out and buy some for herself when th picture of it came up on flickr. So all and all it was a decent Meatwave: small, chill, with tons of food. I hope to see you at the next one, Swim Meat, where we'll take a dip in the newly opened Astoria pool before we get on the with grilling of pizzas!
